What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that originated in China over 5,000 years ago to balance the body, mind and spirit. According to the World Health Organization, acupuncture is effective for treating a wide variety of conditions. It is based on the theory that all of the body’s organs mutually support each other and that living beings have a vital energy that circulates through twelve invisible energy lines, known as meridians, on the body. Each meridian is associated with a different organ system. An imbalance in this flow throughout a meridian is how disease begins. Therefore, in order to be healthy, an individual’s organs (and their functions) must be in balance.
How Does It Work?
Hair thin, disposable needles are placed in these energy channels many of which either begin, or end on the face. They work to modify the energy flow of a person’s body bringing it back into proper balance, while also increasing blood flow and at the same time triggering the activity of our own body’s natural painkillers. The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.
How Can It Help You?
Are you suffering from dry skin, thin brittle hair, insomnia, fatigue, cold, constipation, depression, weight gain…? These are all symptoms of an underactive thyroid, or, hypothyroidism. Symptoms are simply symptoms – a symptom of a larger issue. Taking a step back, we can figure out where these symptoms are coming from and address the body as a whole. What “symptoms” do you have?… anxiety, brain fog, arthritis, neck, shoulder or back pain, sciatica, fatigue, joint pain, swelling, headaches, insomnia, digestive problems, asthma, belly fat…? Acupuncture has been effective for treating these and many other issues.
